OPPO R5 - The World's Thinnest Smartphone

The trend right now in the smartphone department is, phones with large screens. Devices have grown bigger and bigger and the gap between a tablet and a phone is growing smaller and smaller. These so called ‘phablets’ (a phone which has a screen so big it can also be called a tablet) have screens as big as 6 inches. So now the question is how much bigger can they get. Because a device with a screen size of 7 inches is considered a tablet.

As the phones are getting bigger and bigger, we can also see that they are getting thinner and thinner. Mobile making companies have been trying to make devices thin as possible. Pushing the boundaries of making a thin smartphone. The thinnest smartphone until now was the Gionee Elife S5.5, which was a mere 5.55mm thick. But now we have a new champion.

Ladies and Gentlemen, say hello to the thinnest smartphone in the world. The OPPO R5!
The Gionee Elife S5.5 was pretty thin at 5.55mm. But the OPPO R5 has set a new target. This device is a mind blowing, 4.85mm thick. (Take a minute to grasp that).

The concern now would be (because of the iPhone 6 Plus Bendgate issue), will such a thin phone be sturdy and strong. Well, let us see what the phone has to offer other than being thin.

The frame of the phone is made up of hand polished 3D-welded aluminum alloy. So the metal frame should give the phone a very solid build. It has a 5.2 inch AMOLED display with full HD (1080p) resolution. That gives a pixel density of 423 ppi. It is powered by a Snapdragon 615 processor which is a mid-ranged octa core processor for Qualcomm. Clocked at 1.5GHz with Adreno 405 GPU and 2GB of RAM, the device should perform very well.

It houses a 13MP primary camera with Sony sensors and f2.0 aperture and the front camera is a 5MP shooter which should produce some nice selfies for the selfie lovers. Even though the device is so thin, OPPO has managed to cramp into it a 2000mAh battery which supports rapid charging.

The device comes with Android 4.4 KitKat with OPPO’s ColorOS 2.0. Other specials features is that, OPPO has said that it has added special cooling features to prevent the device from over-heating.

OPPO has said that the device will be available from December for $499 in gold, silver and grey colors.

Microsoft Officially Drops the Nokia Branding

Microsoft has officially announced that it will be dropping the Nokia branding on Lumia devices. They will be rebranding them as Microsoft Lumia. The Nokia Lumia 730 and 830 are probably the last devices to have the Nokia branding.

Microsoft will continue to sell feature phones with the Nokia branding. All new Lumia devices will now have the Microsoft branding.

Mind that Nokia is still a company in Finland working mainly on location based services like the HERE maps. But due to the agreement between Nokia and Microsoft, Nokia is not allowed to produce devices till the end of 2015.

Samsung Galaxy Mega 2

Samsung has announced the Galaxy Mega 2 in India for Rs. 20,900. The first generation Galaxy Mega devices were not able to make much impact in the market. Will the new generation be able to make a difference? Let us see!

HARDWARE

As the ‘Mega’ name suggests the device supports a 6.0 inches HD screen with a 720 x 1280 pixels resolution. It turns into a pixel density of 245 ppi. Not very impressive. Samsung could have probably boosted the screen to a full HD panel. The device is powered by a quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor clocked at 1.2 GHz. The processor is supported by 1.5GB of RAM which should be sufficient for the device. But Samsung’s Touchwiz UI has a reputation of being heavy even in powerful devices as the Galaxy S5.
The device has 16GB of internal storage and also supports expandability up to 64GB. So we cannot complain on the storage department.
We move onto the camera. The device supports an 8 MP shooter as its primary camera and a 5 MP shooter as the front camera. The 5 MP front camera was a surprise as the international model which supports LTE has a 2.1 MP front camera. Also, the Indian version does not support LTE. The front camera should produce nice selfies for the selfie lovers. The primary camera is capable of recording video at full HD (1080p) resolution at 30fps.
It comes with a 2800 mAh battery. Samsung has no news on how the battery performs.

SOFTWARE

On the software department, the device comes with the Android version 4.4.3 KitKat with the normal layer of Touchwiz which comes with every Samsung phone.

CONCLUSION

At a price of Rs. 20,900. The Samsung Galaxy Mega 2 is not very impressive but not bad either. Now a days there are a lot of choices in this price range. Many Indian companies have also started making good devices. So if you are about to buy a Samsung Galaxy Mega 2, we would suggest you to look for more options before going for the buy.
